What to know about United Arab Emirates ID card photo
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) requires a recent colour personal photo on a white background for the Emirates ID, following the ICAO standard. The face must fill 70–80% and the photo cannot be more than six months old.

What the photo must comply with
- Face the camera. Head straight and eyes looking directly at the camera, no tilting.
- Neutral expression. Mouth closed, no smiling.
- Even lighting. No shadows on the face or background, no glare.
- Glasses. Glasses are allowed if there is no glare and the eyes are fully visible.
- Hats and caps. Head uncovered; religious garments that do not cover the face are allowed.
- Filters and beauty retouching. The photo must faithfully show your current appearance.
- Religious garments (hijab, turban…) are allowed if the face is visible from forehead to chin.
Specific rules for United Arab Emirates
- Size: 35 × 45 mm; ICP accepts widths of 35 to 40 mm.
- Plain white background with even lighting.
- Photo under six months old; the face fills 70–80%, showing the head and the top of the shoulders.
- Glasses allowed without tinted lenses or glare and with frames not covering the eyes; sunglasses are not accepted.
- Headwear only for religious reasons, with features visible from chin to forehead and both edges of the face.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed and nobody else in the image: baby and child photos must not show toys, chair backs or other people.
- For a renewal, the photo cannot be the same as the one on the current card.
