New Zealand allows a photo taken with your own device for an online application. It must be a 3:4 digital JPG or JPEG portrait, 900 × 1200 to 4500 × 6000 px, 250 KB to 5 MB and less than six months old.

What the photo must comply with
- Face the camera. Head straight and eyes looking directly at the camera, no tilting.
- Neutral expression. Mouth closed, no smiling.
- Even lighting. No shadows on the face or background, no glare.
- Glasses. Glasses are allowed if there is no glare and the eyes are fully visible.
- Hats and caps. Head uncovered; religious garments that do not cover the face are allowed.
- Filters and beauty retouching. The photo must faithfully show your current appearance.
- Religious garments (hijab, turban…) are allowed if the face is visible from forehead to chin.
